The Central Virginia Sanctuary Network formed in 2017 as a response to heightened threats against immigrants and other vulnerable communities. In March 2016, two VICPP board members began convening meetings with representatives of the Latinx and Muslim communities to discern VICPP’s role in standing with people targeted by threats from the current administration. Creating safe and inclusive spaces arose as a key initiative. VICPP’s connection to congregations statewide positioned the organization as a natural partner. Over a dozen congregations from different faith traditions have formally joined the Central Virginia Sanctuary Network, and many others are informal supporters.

Sanctuary Congregation networks are powerful advocacy tools. Places of worship are defined as ‘sensitive locations’ in which ICE should not be conducting enforcement outside of extenuating circumstances. Faith leaders bring a moral voice to decision-makers. Congregations provide access to hundreds of advocates.

The Central Virginia Sanctuary Network will be stronger with your congregation’s support. But, if your congregation is not ready to join, you can still participate in the work of the Central Virginia Sanctuary network by joining the Circles of Protection. VICPP staff will be happy to help you encourage your congregation to join the network.
